Notice the temple at the top of the stairs has an odd number of levels.  In this case, 5.  Koreans were superstitious about this.  I wasn't able to discern why they thought it superstitious, but just that it is.  Sung Tae didn't know or couldn't explain to me in English.  This is at the National Folk Museum of Korea.
